OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/06/13 -- CANARIE, a vital component of Canada's digital infrastructure supporting research, education and innovation, today announced that Jim Ghadbane has been appointed President and CEO of the organization. Jim will assume his duties effective Monday, November 11.
NEWS
The appointment of Jim Ghadbane comes at a critical point in CANARIE's evolution. In the short term, Jim will be responsible for achieving the company's objectives as stated in its current agreement with the Government of Canada, including the ongoing evolution of the advanced research and education network, technology innovation and the development of research software tools, and stimulating innovation and commercialization in Canada's ICT sector.
Jim will continue to develop and deepen relationships with CANARIE stakeholders, including universities, colleges, government research labs, the granting councils, Canada Foundation for Innovation, private sector organizations, researchers, and Industry Canada; partners, including the provincial and territorial advanced networks and Compute Canada; and peer organizations, such as Internet2, to ensure CANARIE evolves to anticipate the changing needs of Canada's research, education and innovation communities. Further, he will lead the development of the strategic plan for CANARIE's next mandate, spanning 2015 - 2020, and will engage CANARIE's public, private and non-profit stakeholders to support and advocate for CANARIE's mandate leading to renewed funding from the Government of Canada.
Jim joined CANARIE as Chief Technology Officer in May 2010, and since that time has led a number of strategic initiatives, including: launch of CANARIE's cloud computing service for entrepreneurs, DAIR; launch of CANARIE's Research Middleware program and the creation of CANARIE's software development team; evolution of CANARIE's backbone network to become 100G (100 Gigabits per second) capable; growth and development of CANARIE's CAF service, an identity and access management solution for research and education communities; creation of the CIO Advisory and Research Advisory Committees; and management of the Network Alliance Infrastructure Program, which provides support for CANARIE's provincial and territorial network partners. As a member of the executive team, Jim also played a key role in defining CANARIE's voice in the broader digital infrastructure ecosystem, and in developing strategic plans and priorities for the company. Prior to his role at CANARIE, Jim held a variety of leadership positions at leading high-tech companies, including Bridgewater Systems (now part of Amdocs), Ceyba Corporation, Alcatel Corporation, and Newbridge Networks.
