MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 11/08/13 -- Elance, the leading online work marketplace, today released its October U.S. Employment Report which shows 55,000 new freelance jobs were created and more than 24,000 new people joined the marketplace looking for work. The monthly report aims to supplement the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) October jobs report, which does not fully capture independent workers due to outdated reporting standards. An estimated one-third of the U.S. workforce is considered to be independent.

Freelancer earnings on Elance were up 63 percent over the same period last year fueled by companies, including large enterprises, which are benefiting from a flexible workforce. Hiring growth continues to be strong year-over-year, with the number of freelancers hired up 48 percent and the number of companies hiring and paying freelancers up 33 percent. The employment report is derived from Elance's October hiring and payment data for the U.S. and measures the number of new jobs created, the number of people looking for work and state-level data on hiring and wage growth.

The October U.S. Employment Report details important growth statistics for the independent workforce:

• Freelancer earnings on the rise: Freelancer earnings in the U.S. increased 63 percent compared to last October.
• Companies are closing the technical talent gap with freelancers: IT & programming continue to be the highest-growth category for freelancers and accounts for more than half of all work completed in October.
• Bi-coastal job creation remains strong: California, Florida and New York remain the leaders for freelance job creation with 11,000, 5,000, and 4,500 respective new jobs created last month, representing 37% of new jobs created.
• States with high unemployment show spike in job seekers: The number of freelancers looking for work saw significant increases in states with unemployment rates above the national average including Illinois and North Carolina.
