NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 12/17/13 -- Varonis Systems, Inc., a provider of software solutions for unstructured, human-generated enterprise data, is helping Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) significantly reduce the amount of time its IT team dedicates to meeting HIPAA compliance requirements. As a world-class cancer treatment center and a leading health care organization, SCCA manages huge amounts of highly sensitive, personally identifiable information (PII). With Varonis DatAdvantage, SCCA now has more insight and better control over who has access to what data and how it is being used.
"With DatAdvantage, we've saved 30 to 40 man hours a week, which my team had previously spent making sure the permissions in our systems were accurate," said Robert Nelson, Infrastructure Architect at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. "HIPAA compliance tasks that would have required the full-time attention of a technician can now be accomplished as part of one of many tasks performed by our IT admins."
With DatAdvantage's reporting capabilities, Nelson was able to see which groups gave an employee access to any given folder along a permissions tree. "Receiving those reports and cleaning up our key folders allowed us to use the reports from DatAdvantage to adapt the permissions into the most useful format for our needs," said Nelson.
Since Nelson and his team could see which groups "lit up" as having access when they clicked on a folder in DatAdvantage, they would immediately know whether there was the potential for unauthorized access. This would have been very difficult to determine before implementing Varonis.
Nelson's team also used DatAdvantage's reports to meet HIPAA's Breach Notification Rule, which requires hospitals to detect when PHI (protected health information) has been accessed by outsiders. Nelson used DatAdvantage to examine files that may have been accessed by employees whom he suspects have been the subject of a phishing attack.
David Gibson, Varonis VP of Marketing, said, "Seattle Cancer Care Alliance is one of the premiere healthcare organizations in the country and therefore has the responsibility to ensure that its patients' data is secure and only accessible by those who should have access. The teams at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance take this responsibility very seriously, and, with the help of Varonis, they can efficiently and confidently meet or exceed HIPAA compliance standards to ensure the security of their patients' data."
Seattle Cancer Care Alliance is a cancer treatment center that unites world-class surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and pathologists. By uniting resources from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington Medical Center and Seattle Children's Hospital, SCCA is in a unique position to offer outstanding outpatient services that leverage leading-edge research. With access to clinical trial data from the latest cancer-fighting techniques and technologies, SCCA doctors deliver revolutionary cancer treatment to their patients.
