LOS ALTOS HILLS, CA and MENLO PARK, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 02/26/14 -- The San Jose Spiders, a professional Ultimate Frisbee team competing in the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL), is proud to announce that Lightspeed Venture Partners, one of Silicon Valley's leading venture capital firms, has signed an agreement to be the team's title sponsor for the 2014 AUDL season.
"Ultimate is a sport filled with players that work in technology and startups," explained Andrew Zill, owner of the Spiders. "For instance, Google co-founder Sergey Brin, WhatsApp co-founders Brian Acton and Jan Koum, Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky, and Quora co-founder Charlie Cheever are all Ultimate players. Lightspeed is at the center of the high technology and startup world, making them the ideal title sponsor."
The San Jose Spiders commences its inaugural season in April after signing up a roster of world-class players from around the Bay Area. The team includes Beau Kittredge, Ashlin Joye and Kurt Gibson, three of seven players recognized by Ultiworld as the best in the country. As stated by Ultiworld, "The Spiders will be one of the most top-end talented Ultimate teams in the world."
"Lightspeed has a long history of backing extraordinary teams," said Peter Nieh, partner of Lightspeed. "We are thrilled to back the Spiders, a startup homegrown right here in Silicon Valley with some of the best players in the world." Nieh added "Lightspeed is also proud to support the sport of Ultimate which exemplifies the spirit of entrepreneurship: high energy, creativity and passion combined with great teamwork."
The name Spiders comes from an internet term for bots that crawl through the web and collect data for search engines. Being in the heart of Silicon Valley, the team name is a tribute to the great tech tradition that has been a part of Silicon Valley for the past six decades.
Rob Lloyd, President of Cisco Systems who leads a Silicon Valley investor group that now owns the majority of the AUDL notes, "Ultimate Frisbee and high technology are the perfect match. As a leader in high technology and an investor in professional Ultimate, I am delighted to see a prestigious firm like Lightspeed sponsor the Spiders, one of our promising new teams in the AUDL."
