SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/11/14 -- Meru Networks® (NASDAQ: MERU), a leader in Wi-Fi networking, today announced that Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. has chosen Meru 802.11ac as its standard for wireless LAN (WLAN) connectivity on all new onboard deployments. The largest global cruise brand has been using Meru 802.11n onboard its ships since 2011, enabling its guests to stay in touch with friends, family and work even when cruising the seas.

The highly reliable, pervasive Wi-Fi networks from Meru let Royal Caribbean guests and crew stay connected while providing the cruise line with an important source of revenue growth. Guest demands for Wi-Fi have extended well beyond having a hotspot to send "Wish You Were Here" emails. People on cruises want to share their experiences on social media, watch videos, do online gaming and check in on work.
Royal Caribbean makes Wi-Fi available in the common areas, restaurants and theaters, in addition to the guest staterooms. Most guests bring at least one mobile device on board, and guests in double-occupancy staterooms may have as many as five or ten mobile devices. The Meru wireless LAN supports up to 8,000 passengers and up to 24,000 clients on a typical Royal Caribbean ship. Guest migration to 802.11ac clients will occur over time but those using 802.11n devices already see clear benefits, including faster data rates, when using the new 802.11ac networks. In its 802.11ac pilot on Navigator of the Seas, Royal Caribbean is seeing 20 percent higher throughput with 802.11n wireless clients.
