SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/31/14 -- Midokura, a global company focused on network virtualization, today announced that Midokura and Softbank Telecom started the collaborative project where Softbank Telecom will define and build network virtualization design using MidoNet, Midokura's network virtualization platform.

As new business applications are developed and released to the market, enterprise IT infrastructure has seen a need to be more flexible and agile. In addition, to avoid vendor lock-in, they see an increasing need for using open-source based components and standardized software.

Softbank Telecom, one of the major telecom and cloud providers in the world, needs to build an IT infrastructure to satisfy these requirements to continue leading the industry. Softbank Telecom's initiative, which is called the "IT infrastructure standardization project," aims to build the IT infrastructure, which enables fast and agile new service development. In addition, Softbank Telecom will leverage the initiative to expand its cloud services.

MidoNet is a software-based, highly distributed, network virtualization system that allows enterprises and service providers to build, run, and manage virtual networks with increased control and flexibility. Using industry standards and leveraging existing physical infrastructure, MidoNet reduces costs and improves stability, scalability and performance of networks.

Softbank Telecom has built a testing environment by using OpenStack, an open source cloud management system, with MidoNet to start functional and performance evaluation.

The collaboration with Softbank Telecom enables Midokura to gain experience of building Telecom-grade IT infrastructure with an open architecture where IT resources are fully virtualized and automated. Softbank Telecom aims to implement OpenStack and MidoNet for its cloud services and solution service offerings in the future based on the result of this phase in the project.
