SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/10/14 -- Meru Networks® (NASDAQ: MERU), a leader in Wi-Fi networking, today announced that Cedarville University has deployed an 802.11ac Meru Education-Grade (MEG) Wi-Fi solution to support thousands of simultaneous connections in relatively small spaces such as residence halls and the school chapel. The network extends to most of the campus' outdoor areas as well.
Cedarville University, ranked fifth in the 2014 US News and World Report Regional College Midwest Rankings, is a private, Baptist institution located in southwest Ohio. Students at Cedarville can choose from approximately 110 areas of study. All students must minor in Bible studies.
"Our daily chapel service brings between 2,500 and 3,000 students together in one room, five days a week," said Dave Rotman, associate vice president for technology and CIO for Cedarville. "Each of the students has two to three mobile devices, and many have the Bible on their phones or tablets and are using them during the service. Meru 802.11ac helps ensure that we give the students an excellent experience. In addition, we have practically zero downtime."
"The number of devices that we see in our residence halls has grown drastically over the past few years, and the use of those devices has changed as well," said Tim Kelly, network engineer at Cedarville. "A couple of years ago it was mostly text-based Internet use, e-mail and that sort of thing. Now it's all video and voice over IP. The 802.11ac from Meru has let us adapt to the growth in bandwidth needs and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future."
The 802.11ac network at Cedarville University covers approximately 40 buildings, including academic buildings and residence halls, along with athletic fields, soccer, baseball, softball, cross-country and track fields. It also extends to several additional outdoor areas where students congregate, helping ensure coverage wherever and whenever students need it.
The MEG wireless solution is designed to solve schools' 1:1 and BYOD challenges and support their learning-essential applications. MEG starts with three simple steps:
1. On-board quickly with 1:1 and BYOD provisioning and secure wireless access mapped to IT policies.
2. Connect all 1:1 and BYOD devices reliably anywhere on campus.
3. Learn by deploying validated learning and teaching applications on 1:1 and BYOD devices over the MEG wireless solution.
"Cedarville University is an IT innovator dedicated to giving its students the best available tools for uninterrupted learning and for life," said Sarosh Vesuna, vice president and general manager of Meru's business units. "The university's campus-wide deployment of Meru 802.11ac helps ensure that students and faculty will be able to use any application, including voice and video, no matter where they are or how many of them are gathered under one roof."
