MEGGEN, SWITZERLAND -- (Marketwired) -- 08/19/14 -- Golden Frog, a global privacy company best known as the provider of the premium personal VPN service VyprVPN, today expanded its privacy offerings by launching a secure messaging application into public beta. Cyphr is as easy-to-use as any mobile messaging app, but all messages are secure, encrypted and only accessible by the end-user.
Cyphr is currently free to use and available on Android and iOS mobile devices, with desktop and web apps coming soon. Users can communicate with both individual contacts and groups, and send attached images. Golden Frog worked to make the user experience as unburdened as possible, so everyone can realize the benefits of encrypted messaging.
"Using encrypted communications tools has traditionally been a cumbersome and technical process that has forced people to choose between security and simplicity," said Sunday Yokubaitis, President, Golden Frog. "With Cyphr, users simply login, create their encryption keys with the push of a button and begin messaging their contacts as they normally would. Cyphr servers are based in Switzerland for maximum privacy and protection."
Unlike startups that push mobile messaging applications to market without first building a secure infrastructure, Golden Frog's core team has fought to preserve online privacy, security and freedom since 1994. The company owns all of its servers, writes its own code, and manages its network to deliver the highest levels of security, speed and privacy.
Golden Frog takes a zero-knowledge approach to the contents of messages with Cyphr. They are always encrypted so that nobody besides the sender and the recipient can view the content. This includes any Golden Frog servers or network devices in between the sender and the recipient. Cyphr gives users a combination of public and private keys so only they can read the conversation -- not wireless providers, ISPs or 3rd parties.
Cyphr marries public and private encryption technologies to create a solution that is secure end-to-end. The sender utilizes public-key cryptography to encrypt messages. After a message has been sent, it cannot be decrypted on the server by Golden Frog or intercepted by hackers because only the recipient holds the private key for decryption. After Golden Frog delivers the message to its intended recipient, all associated metadata is discarded from Cyphr servers.
"Cyphr is intended for people who believe their digital communications should remain private. We've built the application so that we can't access any of the messages stored on our servers," said Philip Molter, co-CTO, Golden Frog. "It is our commitment to keep our users' communications private between their intended recipient and themselves."
