For The ITSM Review, ITSM Consultant Barclay Rae evaluated four participating vendors on their software's ability to support and manage business needs beyond traditional IT and ITSM operational areas. According to Barclay, there is a huge opportunity for IT teams to re-invest themselves as true business partners by using their skills and knowledge and the ITSM tools already in their possession to drive efficiencies beyond IT. This is the essence of Outside IT.

He suggests that service desks or IT teams new to Outside IT should consider creating a specific role with the responsibility to get out into the business and provide a business technology advisory service that specifically looks to see how the ITSM technology and associated best practices can be applied to those Outside IT business challenges.
