JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/17/14 -- South African-based Net1 Mobile Solutions ("N1MS"), a business unit of Net 1 UEPS Technologies Inc. ("Net1") (NASDAQ: UEPS)(JSE: NT1) has donated a further 500 Sun-e-light solar powered lights to members of the Melmoth community in KwaZulu-Natal.
"We created the Sun-e-light for South Africans who have little or no access to electricity, as an ongoing corporate social investment ("CSI") project," says Philip Belamant, Managing Director of N1MS. "We heard that the members of the Melmoth community do not have electricity in their homes, and we hope that the Sun-e-lights will give students the light that they need to do their homework and studying, while giving their parents some much needed illumination in the home too."
The first generation Sun-e-light is a solar-powered lamp that can also be used as a torch and has a port that enables it to charge mobile phones. The second generation Sun-e-light will be Wi-Fi capable and is expected to be used as a Wi-Fi hotspot. It is expected that users will be able to use this functionality to do research online and experience the digital world, which will, for example, provide learners access to academic materials and school graduates access to job-searching portals.
"The Sun-e-light is about so much more than just providing light - it makes it possible for all South Africans to have light in their homes without the risks and costs associated with illuminating paraffin. It also affords dignity and security to people in rural areas who may not have electricity, but they do have an abundance of sunlight that they can now harness for their own benefit," states Mr. Belamant.
"CPS, in collaboration with N1MS looks forward to the ongoing distribution of the Sun-e-light in South African communities where people have limited or no access to electricity," said Nanda Pillay, Vice President Net1 South Africa operations. "Our CSI program has always included the provision of greater accessibility to essential services to South Africans nationwide and our Sun-e-light is an excellent example of this," he concluded.
