SAN DIEGO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/23/14 -- EdgeWave® (www.EdgeWave.com), a San Diego-based cyber security firm, today announced the appointment of Ret. Navy Intelligence Officer Tom Chapman as Director of their Cyber Operations Group (COG). Mr. Chapman, with over 20 years of cyber security and military experience, will lead cyber threat identification and mitigation operations across all EdgeWave teams and technologies.
"We employ a number of veterans at EdgeWave who bring years of cyber warfare experience that are invaluable in helping EdgeWave protect our customers from cyber threats," said Dave Maquera, EdgeWave CEO & President, also a former Navy communications security officer, aviator and Iraqi War combat veteran. "Adding someone with Tom's cyber security pedigree and cyber warfare experience to our team will help our customers stay ahead of even the most persistent and motivated attackers."
In this role leading the EdgeWave Cyber Operations Group, Mr. Chapman will be directly responsible for synchronizing all EdgeWave cyber intelligence and analysis. Specifically, he'll be tasked with managing research on cyber threats, providing commentary and analysis on cyber security from the frontlines and analyzing both open source and proprietary EdgeWave intelligence to help inform and enhance the performance of the company's systems. Mr. Chapman will report to Mike Walls, Managing Director Security Operations & Analysis at EdgeWave, also a former U.S. Military cyber warfare veteran and combat naval aviator, who joined EdgeWave in June 2014. Together, Mr. Walls and Mr. Chapman bring nearly 50 years of military and cyber warfare experience to EdgeWave's Cyber Operations Group.
"We are extremely fortunate to add someone of Tom Chapman's character and skill to the EdgeWave team," said Mr. Walls. "And I am committed to the continued growth of EdgeWave's cyber security capability by adding top flight US Military cyber experts as they transition to civilian life."
"We've reached a point where conventional security controls and monitoring systems cannot protect businesses against today's hackers and cybercriminals," said Mr. Chapman. "With EdgeWave, I'm looking forward to helping build out the company's highly advanced Military-Grade Cybersecurity Platform that combines both artificial and human intelligence, which can help better protect businesses against even the most sophisticated threats.
Before joining EdgeWave, Mr. Chapman established and directed the Task Force 1030 Cyber Analysis Cell supporting the U.S. Navy Fleet Command where his team was responsible for protecting 400,000 personnel, 300 ships and 4,000 aircraft from cyber attacks. Previously, Chapman supported combat operations in Afghanistan as the Senior Intelligence Officer aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt and has served as the Navy liaison officer to the FBI and the National Counter Terrorism Center.
Mr. Chapman holds a bachelor's degree in professional aeronautics from Embry Riddle University and a master's degree in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College. Mr. Chapman is a Certified Ethical Hacker and also holds a number of cybersecurity and counterintelligence credentials.
