The Maine National Guard responds to calls for support for everything from deployments to support Army missions overseas to domestic disaster relief efforts as part of its participation in the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) Region 1, Homeland Response Force 1, and Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC). Maine National Guard, co-located with the state's emergency management center, has a complex set of mission requirements because of their role in supporting both the Army's needs and their domestic responsibilities as part of multiple local, regional and national emergency response and recovery organizations. Their origins go back as far as the 1500s when groups of settlers banded together to protect themselves from French and native attacks. Members of the Maine National Guard have been deployed in every American conflict throughout our history including the most recent Global War on Terror. The Maine National Guard's domestic mission requires a ready response force which deploys to natural and man-made disasters within hours of notification. Coordinating assets for these various missions requires immediate, targeted, efficient and effective communication with specific personnel where ever and whenever the need arises -- AtHoc will be used to meet that requirement.
