SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/03/14 -- Typesafe, provider of the world's leading Reactive platform and the company behind Play Framework, Akka, and Scala, today released the findings of a survey of more than 2,800 Java developers in which Java 8 upgrade plans and attitudes about the key features of the new release were probed.

• Immediate Java 8 Migration Plans
  65% of Java developers have plans to upgrade to Java 8 within the next 24 months. 54% plan to upgrade within the next 12 months. 29% plan to upgrade within the next six months. And only 1% of Java developers who have evaluated Java 8 have decided not to upgrade for the foreseeable future.
  
  
• Overwhelming Appetite for Lambdas
  Survey respondents were asked which Java 8 features they were most excited about. 83% selected lambda expressions and virtual extension methods. The second most popular response was Java 8's enhancement of core libraries with lambda.
  
  
• Oracle Making Progress With Java Security
  Focusing on better securing the Java platform was the main reason cited for last year's decision to delay shipment of Java 8. Respondents were asked whether they believe that Oracle has since done a good job of getting Java security on the right path, and 59% believe they have.

"This interesting snapshot of a sizable number of survey respondents suggests not only an intent to upgrade to Java 8 relatively quickly, but real interest in the new functional programming features it brings," said Stephen O'Grady, Principal Analyst with RedMonk. "Such a transition to mainstream adoption would be typical of enterprise adoption patterns, which require technologies to prove themselves in high scale environments first."
