SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 06/13/12 -- New Relic, Inc., the SaaS-based cloud application performance management provider, in partnership with RedMonk, the developer-focused analyst firm, today released new research on adoption of technologies at all levels of the technology stack including databases, operating systems, web servers and application frameworks. Using data from its customer base of over 24,000 organizations, New Relic examined the use of these technologies as it relates to independent web languages.
"New Relics' data reveals growing diversity among programming environments, which is a natural consequence of the ascendance of developers," said Stephen O'Grady, principal analyst at RedMonk. "If developers are free to make more choices about their infrastructure, it follows that the environments surveyed would become more diverse. This research indicates that we're seeing a wide variety of languages, databases, applications and frameworks employed across today's organizations and also reveals clear trends that show the healthy growth and adoption of open source technologies."
New Relic and RedMonk evaluated technologies used in association with Java, Ruby, PHP and Python. Key findings included:
"New Relic measures more than 45 billion metrics each day, and these metrics tell us that developers are increasingly building more complex applications and using a host of different languages and deployment platforms," said Chris Kelly, product evangelist at New Relic. "Because New Relic takes an agnostic approach to tools and solutions, we are able to measure the demand for different databases, OS, web servers and application frameworks. We are excited to share this data with the greater development community."
Since April 2009, New Relic has published a summary of the most commonly used versions of Ruby and other programming languages. To view the results of the study, visit http://blog.newrelic.com/?p=11079.
