NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 08/12/14 -- The latest report evaluating the need for file analysis and related technologies to ensure organizations' IT security and effectiveness, published by Gartner, Inc., outlines "common use cases and selection criteria for file analysis tools to help business and IT leaders manage unstructured data." Varonis Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRNS), the leading provider of software solutions for unstructured, human-generated enterprise data, believes this report reinforces the central role that its solutions will play as the volume, importance and sensitivity of human-generated data continues to grow.

Gartner, a leading independent provider of IT advisory and market intelligence and research services worldwide, recently published the report, entitled "Does File Analysis Have a Role in Your Data Management Strategy?"(1) Authored by Gartner analysts Garth Landers and Alan Dayley, the report includes an overview of available file analysis technologies. Varonis DatAdvantage is listed in the report for its ability to address three different use cases for file analysis: "Identity and access rights management, security, and storage analytics."

The report includes the results of a Gartner survey that asked IT respondents, "Do you have management tools in place to help better understand your unstructured data?" Forty-five percent of respondents answered "none," and only 24% said they have a "central repository for managing some unstructured data." Key challenges cited in the Gartner report include:

  • "Organizations lack a data map of their unstructured data and are often not aware of what content they have, who owns it and how many copies exist."
  • "Enterprises struggle with the appropriate access rights to information and the protection of personally identifiable information."
  • "Enterprises have a need to manage data systematically, but don't often know the business value of their data and what it means to them."
  • "Data deletion carries a potentially high ROI, but pressing the delete key is much easier said than done."

In advising organizations looking to purchase file analysis solutions, Gartner recommends:

  • "Use file analysis technologies in tandem with other best practices, such as developing retention policies and archiving."
  • "Select file analysis tools based on requirements for metadata analysis, content indexing, reporting, collection, search, integration and data movement to meet organizational requirements when selecting file analysis technologies."
  • "Map the organization's unstructured content infrastructure with file analysis tools, and use subsequent reports to plan for future storage investment and use of current resources."

David Gibson, Varonis Vice President of Marketing, said, "Varonis believes this research reinforces some of the underlying reasons why businesses of all sizes continue to deploy Varonis DatAdvantage, which provides organizations with the ability to keep pace with their data, manage access entitlements efficiently and effectively, audit access to every file and email, identify and involve data owners, and find and classify sensitive and business-critical data."

"Our patented Varonis Metadata Framework brings a tremendous amount of insight into an organization's unstructured data," Gibson continued. "Using DatAdvantage to map an organization's unstructured content infrastructure, in tandem with other best practices such as developing retention policies and archiving, allows an organization to reduce storage and operational costs and make better use of current resources, while at the same time helping to ensure the safety of critical data."
