SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/10/14 -- Mesosphere, developers of new software solutions for managing datacenters and clouds at web scale, today announced that leading Stanford cloud systems researcher Christos Kozyrakis has joined the company. Christos, who will report directly to CTO and company co-founder Tobi Knaup, will drive the cluster efficiency and automation engineering work at Mesosphere based on his academic and industry research.
Kozyrakis comes to Mesosphere from Stanford University where he served as Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science leading the university's multi-scale architecture & systems team (MAST), a research group that investigates hardware architectures, runtime management environments, and system software for warehouse-scale datacenters. His recent research focuses on resource-efficient cloud computing, with the goal to improve the cost and energy efficiency of large-scale datacenters. Kozyrakis also served one year as visiting faculty at Google.
"Christos is one of academia's rock stars in cloud computing and we're excited to bring his insights to our team," said Leibert, Mesosphere CEO. "His breakthrough research at Stanford will deliver unprecedented resource efficiencies to Mesosphere's customers. We expect these will have a massive impact on their datacenters and cloud computing infrastructures, as much as tripling resource efficiency and utilization compared to what we typically see today."
Kozyrakis attracted international attention in March 2014 when he released the results of his latest research in a project called Quasar, a scheduling algorithm that uses machine learning and collaborative filtering to dramatically improve CPU and memory utilization in large clusters while maintaining high quality of service levels.
"Mesosphere is leading the race to build the datacenter operating system that delivers on the promise of computing at scale, giving any organization automated solutions they can use to run their infrastructure in the same ways as Twitter or Google," Kozyrakis said. "It's a big challenge and I look forward to working with the engineering team as we push the boundaries of what is possible for our customers."
Kozyrakis has taught on the Stanford faculty since 2002. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley.
