CHARLOTTE, NC and BURLINGTON, MA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/29/14 -- A Quaero team won the second annual Hackathon CLT (MMXIV), Charlotte's biggest social coding event, where designers, developers, analysts and programmers collaborate to solve a specific business problem. Sponsored by Harris Teeter, Proctor & Gamble Co., Tresata, ettain group and Data Chambers, the event brought together nearly 120 of the best and brightest minds in Charlotte's technology community. Quaero fielded two teams comprising data scientists, analytic consultants and technologists. Participants included Cory Hefner, Kevin Pedde, Nimish Nimish and Nitin Kak.
"This year we raised the stakes with a bigger cash prize, and participants really delivered," offered Katie Levans, Marketing Director for Tresata, one of the event sponsors. "The work produced in less than 24 hours at this year's Hackathon exceeded our expectations, and is a testament to the talent found right here at home in Charlotte's tech community."
Hackathon CLT focused on Big Data and participants were challenged to identify how supermarket chain Harris Teeter could use key shopper metrics to help them better predict both product and channel usage, especially as it relates to the Express Lane checkout and specific P&G product category correlations. Working with a massive data set of more than 500 million records, the winning Quaero team successfully built a predictive model to identify which customers would become Harris Teeter Express Lane customers. The solution included the googleVis R package for bubble chart visualizations that highlight the differences in customer spend for the different products Express Lane customers are purchasing. The entire competition -- gaining access to the data, building a database, analyzing the data and reporting the results -- took less than 24 hours. The winning Quaeronauts team took home $4,000 in prize money.
"The Hackathon CLT event is a great opportunity to showcase the huge brain trust of technology and analytics talent here in Charlotte as well as within Quaero," added Naras Eechambadi, CEO of Quaero. "We are thrilled not only for the win, but also for our four volunteer participants, who, on little sleep, displayed great enthusiasm and humor while showcasing their considerable talents. We are very proud to have them as part of our family."
