SANTA CLARA, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/21/14 -- DataStax, the company that delivers Apache Cassandra to the enterprise, today announced that Gartner Inc. the world's leading information technology research and advisory company, has named DataStax a 'Visionary' in the 2014 Magic Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems (ODBMS). Gartner defines the operational database management system market "by relational and nonrelational database management products that are suitable for a broad range of enterprise-level transactional applications." DataStax believes it exemplifies this vision by providing a distributed database that allows businesses to innovate in new ways and create expanding and differentiated market opportunities. The company's product, DataStax Enterprise, a NoSQL database technology with Apache Cassandra at its core, provides enterprises capabilities such as search, analytics, and in-memory technology. The full report is available for viewing, here.
The October 16, 2014 report, authored by Gartner analysts Donald Feinberg, Nick Heudecker and Merv Adrian, states, "The OLTP DBMS market, from which the operational DBMS market evolved, was very mature in the early years of the 21st century. However, as Internet usage and availability grew, so did the applications necessary to support the associated, growing infrastructure. Consequently, over the past five years, many new vendors have entered this market with products to support the specialized applications required by a new and global business arena."
PERSPECTIVES ON THE NEWS
"Apache Cassandra is an outstanding technology that exceeds our expectations in the suited areas and is a huge win for us in terms of scale and performance," said Tushar Thakker, Chief Data Architect at Intuit.
"We believe being named as a Visionary in the Gartner MQ is a clear acknowledgement by the world's leading industry analysts that not only is NoSQL maturing, but also we feel that DataStax is well-positioned to be a leading disruptor in the $34 billion ODBMS market," said Billy Bosworth, CEO, DataStax. "We are excited that DataStax is now ranked the highest for 'ability to execute' in the Visionaries Quadrant. By passionately focusing on our customers' success we can continue our march toward the leadership quadrant in 2015."
GROWING GLOBAL COMMUNITY
Apache Cassandra is growing significantly as shown by the 2014 Cassandra Summit held in September which attracted more than 2,000 attendees and leading companies such as Apple, Netflix, Sony Entertainment Networks, Activision Blizzard, ING, Orange, Instagram and many others. This strong community demonstrates the compelling functionality provided by Cassandra and validates the commitment thousands of users have devoted to this project, assuring customers that this is a long-term technology with lots of room for growth.
NOSQL MOMENTUM
Last year, almost every NoSQL provider was listed as a "Niche" vendor but now companies such as DataStax have exited that category and are listed as major players whose products we feel align to the long-term development of the operational database management systems market. For such a large and important market, this is a major change to occur within one year. In our opinion, it signals the rapid changes taking place because relational database management systems vendors are unequipped to meet the needs of next-generation applications that must remain always on, no matter what and scale to any size.
Gartner does not endorse any vendor, product or service depicted in its research publications, and does not advise technology users to select only those vendors with the highest ratings or other designation.
