AJAX, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 09/03/14 -- School bells have begun to ring out across the country and it seems that many parents had a new vehicle on their back-to-school shopping lists. Sales at Volkswagen Canada established a new all-time record for the month of August with 6,464 new cars and light trucks being delivered to customers by the company's 136 dealers. The total was 11% above the previous record, set just last year (5,804). Year-to-date, the 44,786 new Volkswagens sold represent a 6% increase over last year.

Leading the way for the company are its three most popular models. The all-new, 7th generation 2015 Golf and GTI combined with the Golf Wagon to notch up 1,762 sales during the month. The Golf is now also available in a sporty three door version, and offers the latest version of Volkswagen's TDI Clean Diesel engine, which features a 7% increase in power while delivering 8% better fuel economy and significantly lower emissions.

The Tiguan compact sport utility has proven to be a very popular choice among buyers in the segment. Its 200 hp engine and available 4MOTION all-wheel-drive give it go-anywhere capability in a size that fits both city and country lifestyles. 1,005 Tiguans were sold last month.

The top-selling car in the Volkswagen lineup continues to be the Jetta sedan, with 2,757 being delivered in August. A refreshed version of the popular sedan is now available at dealers which include a restyled exterior combined with an elegant new interior. The Jetta now offers the latest driver safety aids including blind spot awareness, forward collision warning and rear cross traffic alert.
