MENLO PARK, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/24/13 -- Vello Systems, a leading provider of open, converged networking and software solutions and charter member of the Open Networking Foundation, today announced the establishment of a three-node optical network featuring white-box Ethernet switches in Equinix's NY5 International Business Exchange (IBX®) data center in New York to act as a test bed for software-defined networking (SDN). SDN helps simplify network connectivity for network administrators by allowing the network to optimize itself based on the specific application using the network.
The Vello Systems OpenFlow-based SDN solution, dubbed VellOS® 7.0, is the first scalable enterprise network operating system that liberates enterprise CIOs and their data center teams from the current constraints of expensive, single-vendor networking architectures. Unlike most SDN virtual overlay solutions that have no awareness of the underlying network, VellOS unifies the control of the optical, Ethernet and virtual networking planes under common open software and features a newfound level of automation not found in competing offerings.
Equinix IBX data centers offer access to more than 900 public and private networks, providing an ideal place for Vello Systems to test its open, vendor-agnostic VellOS operating system.
The VellOS 7.0 OpenFlow-enabled application platform is used by leading financial institutions, including those served by the Hudson Fiber Network, to create distributed modular Ethernet and optical architectures to determine which parts of the network to use in support of new applications and service requirements. By leveraging Equinix's robust financial ecosystem, Vello Systems can effectively offer financial firms a competitive advantage via the fastest routes to the world's leading exchanges and trading platforms.
"Customers are looking at SDN as a means to an end, not as an end in itself. Vello understands that customers care about results, including business and operational agility, service velocity, and reduced operational and capital expenditures," said Brad Casemore, Research Director, Datacenter Networks International Data Corporation. "With VellOS, the company's aim is to ensure that the underlying network infrastructure is aligned with and responds dynamically to customer requirements relating to key application workloads and services."
"At Vello Systems, our goal is to unshackle the network from hardware restraints and allow IT systems to freely evolve based on business needs on a real-time basis," said Karl May, Chief Executive Officer, Vello Systems. "We believe SDN is the key to drastically changing the economics of the data center from being capital-driven to operating expense-driven. With this test bed, we are successfully demonstrating how an OpenFlow network can drastically simplify network connectivity and application deployment over any mix of network topologies while significantly reducing CAPEX expenditures."
