The new Cayenne GTS announces its outstanding sporting character in its very name. These three letters hark back to the famous 904 Carrera GTS of 1963. In 2007, the Cayenne GTS became the first Porsche of the modern era to revive the acronym that has since adorned especially sporty Porsche models. Simultaneously, the familiar 3.6-litre 6 cylinder engine reappears in the latest entry to the range.
It is not only the name of the Cayenne GTS that resonates. The 3.6-litre V6 bi-turbo engine is the performance-oriented enhancement presented in the Cayenne S. Its efficiency is increased and it delivers improved performance: compared to the previous naturally aspirated V8 engine, power output rises by 20 hp to 440 hp and torque by 63 lb. ft. to 443 lb. ft., while fuel consumption drops by 0.9 litre (according to the NEDC). The Cayenne GTS accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds (5.1 with the optional Sport Chrono package) and achieves a top speed of 262 km/h. A sports exhaust system is standard, which provides the familiarly meaty GTS sound.
The standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) damping system has a sporty set-up which allows the vehicle to sit 24 mm lower (20 mm with the optional air suspension). Further standard features include Cayenne Turbo brakes with 390-mm front discs and 358 mm rears with red calipers.
Other design attributes confer the Cayenne GTS a sporty appearance. The Cayenne Turbo nose section with large air intakes, the Sport Design package, including more contoured side sills and wheel arch extensions are all standard. The latter, like the roof spoiler and lower rear of the vehicle, are body coloured. Black is omnipresent and provides some striking contrasts: all lettering is black, as are the 20-inch RS Spyder design wheels, exhaust tailpipes, bi-xenon headlights' inner apertures. You also find darkened LED taillights and GTS lettering now appears on the front doors.
The sporting character continues inside. Eight-way electrically adjustable sports seats in leather/Alcantara upholstery, with GTS-emblazoned headrests are standard. Alcantara is the predominant upholstery material used inside the car. The optional interior GTS package is available in carmine red or rhodium silver with rev counter face, decorative stitching, headrest lettering, and seat belts in contrasting colour.
The engine used in the Cayenne, the entry model, is the familiar 3.6-litre naturally aspirated six cylinder engine, delivering 300 hp. It accelerates the Cayenne from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds (7.6 with the optional Sport Chrono package). That's 0.2 seconds faster than before. Top speed matches the previous version at 230 km/h.
Like all new Cayenne models it benefits from the general efficiency measures, such as coasting, Auto Stop/Start function and thermal management, as a result of which fuel consumption drops by 0.7 l/100 km to 9.2 l/100 km (according to the NEDC).
Compared to the previous model the new Cayenne offers an even more generous list of standard features. In addition to the new eight-speed Tiptronic S with Auto Stop/Start and coasting functions these also include, bi-xenon main headlights with four-point LED daytime driving lights, multi-function sports steering wheel with paddle switches, power-operated trunk lid, and more.
The Cayenne and Cayenne GTS are celebrating their world premiere on November 19th at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. Both models will arrive in Canada at the end of February 2015. Pricing will start at $67,400 for the Cayenne and $108,200 for the Cayenne GTS.
