MILPITAS, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/19/14 -- FireEye, Inc. (NASDAQ: FEYE), the leader in stopping today's advanced cyber attacks, today announced the appointment of Shane McGee as chief privacy officer. McGee, previously general counsel and vice president of legal affairs at Mandiant, will assume responsibility for growing and governing a new global privacy program that will establish data protection standards and lead industry improvement initiatives.
"The global role that threat intelligence and information sharing in cybersecurity now plays has created a rapidly changing environment that demands dedicated attention to privacy issues," said Shane McGee, chief privacy officer, FireEye. "The information security community has a clear goal of reducing the impact of breaches, but we also need to establish and promote clear standards with policy makers, customers, partners, and the general public, to ensure responsible business practices align with that goal across the industry."
Under McGee, the FireEye global privacy program will work with governing bodies, businesses, and employees worldwide to build regulatory practices that meet local needs while enabling the advancement of global cybersecurity in the face of advanced threats. As part of the program, FireEye will demonstrate how intelligence sharing strengthens consumer privacy and security. Another key area of focus will be determining best practices for information sharing in the wake of a breach to improve remediation outcomes.
"Shane's experience and background make him the perfect choice to assure both our employees and our customers that private information is secure and being handled responsibly in all circumstances," said David DeWalt, chairman of the board and CEO, FireEye. "As the advanced threats we block look for as many vectors as possible to steal information and access networks, establishing a global privacy program is a crucial next step in establishing the most effective cybersecurity model for the threats of today."
McGee has worked as a practicing attorney in the areas of data privacy and security law for 15 years. He headed SNR Denton's (now Dentons) U.S. Data Protection practice prior to joining Mandiant as general counsel in 2011. Over the course of his career, McGee has counseled some of the world's largest technology companies on privacy and security issues, represented companies in front of the FTC and other regulators charged with protecting consumer privacy, drafted hundreds of data protection policies, responded to security breaches, and advised clients on how and when to notify customers when a breach occurs. Before becoming a practicing attorney, McGee was programmer, consultant and instructor, and remains a Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP).
About FireEye, Inc.
FireEye has invented a purpose-built, virtual machine-based security platform that provides real-time threat protection to enterprises and governments worldwide against the next generation of cyber attacks. These highly sophisticated cyber attacks easily circumvent traditional signature-based defenses, such as next-generation firewalls, IPS, anti-virus, and gateways. The FireEye Threat Prevention Platform provides real-time, dynamic threat protection without the use of signatures to protect an organization across the primary threat vectors and across the different stages of an attack life cycle. The core of the FireEye platform is a virtual execution engine, complemented by dynamic threat intelligence, to identify and block cyber attacks in real time. FireEye has over 2,200 customers across more than 60 countries, including over 130 of the Fortune 500.
