SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/20/14 -- Midokura, a global company focused on network virtualization, today announced its partnership with Cumulus Networks, the company bringing the power of Linux to networking. The companies plan to offer a joint technology solution that will enable customers to manage workloads on virtual and non-virtualized infrastructure with a technology preview by May 2014 and a GA offering by Q3 2014. This partnership further extends the new networking open ecosystem where businesses can have the flexibility to choose between various industry standard networking hardware, network operating systems and applications.
"The partnership between Midokura and Cumulus Networks represents a significant step forward in the modern networking movement," said Dan Mihai Dumitriu, Midokura CEO and co-founder. "By enabling virtual networks to span across both virtual and physical workloads, we will give customers the power of choice and the ability to experience networking without constraints."
MidoNet is a software-based, highly distributed, network virtualization system that allows service providers and enterprises to build, run, and manage virtual networks with increased control and flexibility. Using industry standards and leveraging existing physical infrastructure, MidoNet reduces costs and improves stability, scalability and performance of networks.
With Cumulus® Linux®, Cumulus Networks fills a critical gap in realizing the true promise of the software-defined data center and extends a multi-platform operating system for networking hardware that makes building, managing and automating massive-capacity next-generation data center networks simple.
Traditionally, network virtualization allows communication only amongst virtual devices and machines on overlay networks. Together, Midokura and Cumulus Networks will provide a solution that enables MidoNet to connect to physical switches running Cumulus Linux, allowing network traffic flows from virtual machines to machines running on physical infrastructure through the VxLAN Tunnel Endpoint (VTEP) gateway. With a highly distributed architecture of MidoNet, the solution offering with Cumulus Networks will be a clear advantage to the growing number of organizations interested in connecting scalable virtual networks to physical workloads such as high performance database, email servers, legacy systems at line rate. The joint solution will enable service providers and enterprise customers to provision networks for physical workloads, in a matter of minutes.
Midokura is a top contributor to OpenStack Neutron, the project to provide "networking as a service". By aligning with Cumulus Networks, the company reiterates its commitment to leverage industry standards, such as VxLAN, BGP, GRE and Open vSwitch. Implementing a solution that builds upon established industry standards gives a lot more choice to the customer and avoids the exorbitant cost and resources associated with vendor lock-in.
Specifically, the Midokura MidoNet technology, coupled with Cumulus Linux, will enable customers to:
"Virtual networks are a central part of the data center and more organizations are seeking better ways to scale virtual environments," said Reza Malekzadeh, VP of Business, Cumulus Networks. "We are pleased to partner with Midokura to allow joint users to do this easily and in the most cost effective manner possible by removing the barriers of rigid, proprietary hardware devices with demanding workload mobility."
"Enterprise and cloud service providers are going through a transformation to SDN-architected networks to improve automation in their data centers via increased network programmability," stated Cliff Grossner, Directing Analyst, Infonetics Research. "In our view, Midokura and Cumulus Networks are the first in the industry to bring together network virtualization and bare metal networking with the aim of providing an open network that will enable innovation in automating operations for virtual and non-virtual workloads. We believe that enterprises and cloud service providers will want to look at how the Midokura-Cumulus solution will improve application deployment timeframes and reduce operational costs."
Midokura will be teaming with Infonetics Research and Cumulus Networks on a free March 25th webinar focused on virtualizing networks with SDN. The companies will discuss the current state of the SDN and network virtualization market, the importance of a unified network architecture combining virtual overlay and physical underlay networks, an architecture for scalable and resilient network virtualization overlays (NVOs) and the power of choice with a disaggregated, open networking platform.
