• More than 75 percent of respondents say that managing Big Data and making it accessible across the enterprise helps organizations make better business decisions
• How organizations manage and analyze their large and diverse growing data sets have become a priority among both IT and line-of-business executives

RainStor, a provider of Big Data management software, today announced findings of a recent survey which provides greater insight on how large enterprises are adopting technology to better manage and analyze Big Data. Sponsored by RainStor, the results comprise responses from senior-level executives from a range of industry sectors including banking, financial services, communications and manufacturing.

Findings from the survey indicate that:

• Big Data helps organizations make better business decisions. A majority of respondents (75.5 percent) agree that the ability to manage Big Data and make it available across the enterprise is extremely important for improving overall business value.
  
  
• Velocity and variety of data continue to present some of the biggest challenges for enterprises. 37 percent of survey respondents indicate that the biggest challenges around managing Big Data are the speed of data creation (velocity), increase in types of data (variety), and the ability to provide analytics against data.
  
  
• New skills are needed. The lack of relevant skills in newer technologies, such as Hadoop, was a prominent theme; whereas standard SQL still appears to be the "enterprise standard" when running queries and analysis again existing data warehouses.
  
  
• Companies look for less expensive data warehouses when capacity is reached. Almost 30 percent of respondents look to less expensive data warehouses when they reach capacity in their existing enterprise data warehouse. One quarter of those surveyed said they archive data to offline tape, which for 37% of respondents takes multiple days to retrieve the data back.
  
  

What Big Data Technology options are being considered?
There is no question that the popularity of a Hadoop-based environment to better manage and analyze Big Data at low cost is on the rise among enterprises today. Of those seriously looking at Hadoop, it is evenly split between being considered as an augmentation to existing data warehouse/database environments versus a stand-alone solution. The study shows that just over half of those looking at Hadoop want to augment their existing data warehouse infrastructure.

When asked what the limiting factors are for those looking to adopt and deploy Hadoop, more than half of the respondents agreed that they either lack the skilled resources or they simply have limited bandwidth to take on new technologies and projects. Although managing and analyzing Big Data is high on the business and IT priority list, it is still challenging to achieve inside a large enterprise.
