SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/17/12 -- Meru Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: MERU), a leader in virtualized 802.11n wireless networking, today announced the company has been working with Texas A&M University-Commerce (A&M-Commerce) to deploy a campus-wide wireless service that would address the growing onslaught of Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) that is being experienced at the University.
Reflecting on the progress since deployment, Jeff Faunce, director of infrastructure services at A&M-Commerce, has seen linear growth in mobile devices being used on campus and exponential growth in student and faculty expectations for Wi-Fi service. For a university with few IT resources, valuable time was being spent on the existing Wi-Fi network's channel planning, service allocation for new deployments and ad-hoc service management for installed APs.
A&M-Commerce enlisted Meru Networks for fast deployment of a centrally managed wireless network to cover an entire campus. Meru was able to connect the entire campus in six months. This was two and half years ahead of the schedule the University thought it would take due to the time it took their former Wi-Fi network to be deployed.
News Facts:
- The Meru wireless network at A&M-Commerce covers 20 buildings and three dorms on a 1,834-acre campus serving 11,500 students. Outdoor wireless coverage will be available soon.
- The network consists of 346 AP320s connected to two MC4200 controllers in n+1 configuration for redundancy.
- Separate, secure channel layers were provided for a special robotics research project in order to stop any interference with the rest of the University traffic on the main channel.
- With the IT resources saved from eliminating the need for labor-intensive channel planning, A&M -Commerce turned its attention to projects that provide more efficiency and capabilities to the University, such as planning for its outdoor Wi-Fi coverage and adding Wi-Fi roaming for staff using Voice-Over-IP.

-- Jeff Faunce, director of infrastructure services, Texas A&M University-
Commerce
"I would much rather that we spend our time and resources on new
projects bringing more efficiencies or new capabilities to the
university, instead of solving the same problem over and over again,"
says Faunce. "As it turned out, the problem of channel planning had
already been solved by Meru Networks."
-- Sarosh Vesuna, general manager of education, Meru Networks
"Meru worked with Texas A&M University-Commerce to deploy a flexible,
scalable Wi-Fi solution, eliminating the need for their IT staff to
spend hours of endless time consuming site-planning exercises. Now, they
are able to stay ahead of their requirements to provide greater wireless
coverage to expand their Meru wireless LAN."
