SAN DIEGO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/02/12 -- Astute Networks, Inc., the leading provider of performance storage for virtual machines, today announced results from a just completed virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) benchmark report produced by leading market research firm, The Evaluator Group. The report, based on the Evaluator Group's VDI-IOmark benchmark, tested storage system performance of Astute's ViSX Flash VM storage appliance running demanding Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) workloads. The results show that ViSX delivers the industry's lowest cost per VDI user ($/VDI Desktop) as well as the ability to support the industry's highest number of VDI users and the highest IOPS of any iSCSI connected storage device.
"When testing the Astute ViSX appliance, we were immediately impressed with its ability to easily support a large number of VDI users," said Russ Fellows, senior partner, Evaluator Group. "We have run the VDI-IOmark benchmark on a variety of traditional, flash and hybrid storage solutions and ViSX proved to be the most cost-effective VDI storage solution that we have tested at the lowest cost per VDI user. At 400 standard users with a $30K price, I believe this price/performance leadership could hold up for some time, particularly for iSCSI attached devices."
"We have run the VDI-IOmark benchmark on a variety of traditional, flash and hybrid storage solutions and ViSX proved to be the most cost-effective VDI storage solution that we have tested, showing outstanding performance under both heavy worker and standard worker VDI workloads with the lowest cost per VDI user."
The VDI-IOmark benchmark, developed in conjunction with storage and virtualization vendors, is a storage-centric benchmark that recreates VMware View VDI workloads on a storage system and uses the concept of workload replay. I/O streams are captured from actual running applications, and then "replayed" so that the exact sequence and I/O commands are issued. This allows the creation of a workload that is indistinguishable from an actual workload to the system under test, while being reproducible and requiring fewer resources. VDI-IOmark recreates typical usage, including boot storms and steady state operations commonly found in a VDI environment, thus highly indicative of a VDI production environment.
As a result of the Evaluator Group benchmark test, the following conclusions were validated regarding Astute's ViSX Flash VM storage appliances:
"VDI applications are frequently performance constrained due to the storage I/O bottlenecks created by legacy storage systems," said Steve Topper, CEO, Astute Networks. "Rather than overcoming these challenges by over-provisioning storage with costly upgrades, our ViSX Flash VM storage appliance removes virtual machine storage and network performance barriers by combining fast Flash storage with our patented 10G DataPump Engine. By eliminating these common I/O constraints and the two main obstacles to widespread VDI deployments, performance and cost, customers receive dramatic acceleration in virtual machine performance so the true value of their VDI investments can be realized."
Astute's patented 10 Gigabit Ethernet DataPump Engine and Networked Flash architecture have been purpose-built to deliver tightly fused, high performance, low power solutions that remove traditional storage and network I/O constraints. ViSX works seamlessly with all virtualization platforms including VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer, and Red Hat RHEV and, by complementing existing SAN or NAS infrastructures with a non-disruptive, additive, and highly optimized flash-based datastore tier to uniquely satisfy the performance requirements of the most demanding virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments. Network-based, ViSX quickly and efficiently provisions up to 140,000 sustained random IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second) that is fully shareable by all virtual machines on all hosts over pervasively deployed 10Gb or 1Gb Ethernet networks -- all in a cost effective and easy-to-deploy standard 2U rack mount appliance.
