IRVINE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/05/13 -- Solarflare, the leader in application-intelligent 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) networking software and hardware, today announced the release of its Firmware Development Kit (FDK) for the ApplicationOnload™ Engine (AOE). The launch of the FDK will enable developers and customers to more easily create and deploy customized applications in Altera's high-performance Stratix® V FPGA onboard the AOE.

Fresh off the heels of Solarflare's deployment of the first two applications for the ApplicationOnload Engine, the release of the AOE FDK clears the way for software developers to bring new, customized applications to market. Solarflare's FDK is the industry's first development environment for creating FPGA-based applications that enable real-time, on-the-fly processing of network data on the AOE, helping to accelerate and simplify deployment of a variety of applications in a multitude of industries, including financial services, security, government, and others. Solarflare's FDK, with a rich development environment and complete toolkit, includes host OS drivers, FDK board services, ingress components such as packet parsers and look-up engines, an FDK user guide, an AOE-MM access library for host software configuration and management of applications and services on the FPGA, and baseline Quartus project ready for custom development.

"The AOE platform, together with its significant development kit, greatly simplifies the creation and deployment of applications based on our high-performance Stratix V FPGAs," said David Gamba, director of Altera's military, compute and storage business unit. "Solarflare has created a comprehensive FDK that utilizes Altera's Quartus II software to enable a straightforward integrated application development environment."

Launched in 2012, Solarflare's ApplicationOnload Engine represents the next step in the evolution of application acceleration and places Solarflare on the leading edge of the wave of customized compute. The AOE offers programmable, customizable silicon that allows for the proliferation of applications directly on server adapters that will exponentially increase network performance and greatly reduce CPU loads. Customized compute fundamentally changes the way networks process data, overcoming performance obstacles that cannot be solved by simply adding more processors.

"Our AOE and its feature-rich development environment, transforms the way FPGA-based applications are created and deployed. Since the ApplicationOnload Engine offers a transparent interface to the network, developers can now focus on the creation of their applications. We've taken care of the rest," said Russell Stern, CEO of Solarflare. "This simplifies FPGA-based application development and deployment as never before, greatly reducing time to market. We are very pleased with the positive feedback we have received from our development partners regarding both the AOE Custom Compute platform and the FDK in particular."
