TORONTO -- (Marketwired) -- 04/02/13 -- Mobile World Congress -- Infobright today announced that its customer, J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI), has been named by IDG's Computerworld as a 2013 Computerworld Honors Laureate for its use of investigative analytics to mine massive volumes of genomic data from the world's oceans. The annual award program honors visionary applications of information technology promoting social, economic and educational change.

"Technology continues to play a pivotal role in transforming how business and society functions. For the past 25 years the Computerworld Honors Program has had the privilege of celebrating innovative IT achievements," said John Amato, vice president and publisher, Computerworld. "Computerworld is honored to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of the 2013 class of Laureates and to share their work. These projects demonstrate how IT can advance organizations' ability to compete, innovate, communicate and prosper."

JCVI is a world leader in genomic research, best known for the work of its founder and president, Dr. J. Craig Venter, and his team in decoding the first draft of the human genome. The organization's groundbreaking Global Ocean Sampling Expedition (GOS) collects and analyzes microorganisms found in seawater, with the aim of furthering scientific knowledge related the evolution of the oceans, microbial biodiversity, climate change, and more. JCVI uses Infobright's investigative analytics engine to quickly and cost-effectively load, compress and analyze huge volumes of this genomic data, so that GOS research can continue at an efficient pace even as advances in genetic sequencing technology allow more data to be captured overall.

"JCVI is honored to be named to the 2013 class of Computerworld Honors Laureates for this technology deployment," said Michael Heaney, database manager for JCVI.

"We're thrilled that JCVI has been named a 2013 Computerworld Honors Laureate and are especially pleased that Infobright's technology is playing a role in the important work of the GOS expedition," said Don DeLoach, CEO of Infobright. "Our goal is to help organizations of all kinds capitalize on their big data as efficiently and effectively as possible."

The Computerworld Honors Program awards will be presented at the Gala Evening and Awards Ceremony on June 3, 2013 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. Coverage of the Computerworld Honors Program will also appear in the June 3, 2013 issue of Computerworld and online at www.computerworld.com.
