SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 04/23/13 -- zSpace, Inc., a technology provider that is transforming the future of human-computer interaction, today announced the immediate availability of the zSpace User Interface (UI) Guidelines for the Company's developer community. The guidelines were released at zCon 2013, the world's first interactive 3D computing conference, ending today at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California.
zSpace, a virtual holographic platform comprised of a 3D stereoscopic display, 3D glasses and a laser stylus, enables users to visualize and directly interact with holographic simulations as if they are real objects. The platform's head-tracking capabilities allow for users to work in six degrees of freedom, making the experience comfortable, intuitive and highly realistic. The zSpace UI Guidelines describe in detail what a developer needs to know in order to design an immersive, compelling and comfortable user experience for a zSpace application. The guidelines also establish the framework and consistency required to move a zSpace enabled applications into the mainstream of software development.
The zSpace UI Guidelines include: an overview of zSpace characteristics, which define what makes zSpace unique; a design framework, including fundamental design principles; and a series of design rules for zSpace enabled applications. In addition to the UI Guidelines, zSpace will deliver a UI software toolkit, initially for developers who have licensed Unity Pro from Unity Technologies, which will enable developers to quickly build or modify an application within the zSpace UI guidelines. The first version of this UI toolkit will be available this coming summer.
"UI Guidelines are a critical first step in the creation of a new user interface paradigm. What zSpace has released represents that for lifelike and interactive 3D," says Jeff Johnson, President and Principal Consultant at UI Wizards, Inc. "I have worked in the field of Human Computer Interaction since 1978. In my recent book, Designing with the Mind in Mind, I identified the need for application designers to have enough of a background in perceptual and cognitive psychology that UI design guidelines make intuitive sense. What is so exciting about zSpace is that their product was designed using principals of perceptual and cognitive psychology. With the release of the UI Guidelines and coming toolkit, designers will be able to create intuitive application interactions like never before."
"Just like Microsoft and Apple accelerated the success of their software developers by providing guidelines that created a consistent user experience, zSpace is providing tools that will empower both our developers and end users," said Carola Thompson, Chief Design Officer of zSpace, Inc. "By delivering the world's first 3D UI Guidelines, we have taken an important step in helping software developers capture the zSpace experience in their applications, easily and consistently. We are eager to see how developers across all industries ranging from product manufacturing to healthcare and beyond apply these guidelines to application development in their unique fields."
