BURLINGTON, MA -- (Marketwired) -- 06/06/13 -- Rapid-I, a leading provider of open source solutions for predictive analytics, data mining and text mining, today announced RapidMiner was the leader in KDNuggets' most recent poll about the use of Analytics, Big Data, Data Mining, and Data Science software. The 14th annual KDNuggets Software Poll, which concluded this week, drew a record 1880 voters, more than double last year's participation. Voters reported a balance between commercial and open source software, with 29 percent reporting the use of commercial software but not open source software, while 30 percent used open source software but not commercial, and 41 percent used both.

The poll also reported:

• Ten percent of voters used their own code, a dramatic drop from 47 percent recorded in 2012, and likely reflecting the growing maturity of open source and commercial tools;
• Excel and R are used by 0.9 percent and 6.5 percent of voters as their only solution, respectively, an indication that these are primarily used as supporting tools; and
• The average number of tools used was three.
