SharkScope considered multiple options to get the performance they needed. They explored buying additional servers to distribute the data, but this was prohibitively expensive, and they would also eventually outgrow the additional servers. Another option was to relocate the data to a NoSQL database, but migrating from MySQL to NoSQL would mean restructuring and rewriting the application, an expensive and time-consuming project. In the end they chose to go with TokuDB, an option that does not require code changes or additional servers.
