AUSTIN, TX -- (Marketwired) -- 09/11/13 -- Zenoss Inc., a leading provider of unified IT monitoring and management solutions for physical, virtual and cloud-based IT infrastructures, today announced the results of the "State of IT Monitoring," an August 2013 commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Zenoss. The research surveyed 157 IT professionals in North America on the current state of IT's ability to manage the performance and availability of critical applications and services in an increasingly complex IT environment. A key finding in the study is that more than one third of organizations still experience business impacting performance or availability issues on a daily basis.

"As more organizations embrace hybrid IT, the task of monitoring and managing these environments becomes more complex," explained Chris Smith, CMO of Zenoss. "Virtualization and cloud computing are adding layers of abstraction that make detecting and troubleshooting performance issues more difficult, and these findings show that downtime is still a huge issue. We're encouraging organizations to seek a better, more modern approach to managing their data center."

More key findings from the research:

• IT is failing to proactively detect and fix issues -- even though awareness of an issue/problem, before it impacted end users, was the number one benefit company's sought in a monitoring tool -- 28 percent are unaware of service degradation until end users or business leaders contact them
• It takes too long and too many people for IT to find and fix issues -- 41 percent of the respondents spend from one hour to more than a week to identify the root cause of service problems and over half need to involve four full-time employees
• IT tools clutter is still an issue -- more than 50 percent are using five or more monitoring tools, and an astonishing 14 percent are using 20 or more different tools to find and fix issues, leading to slow detection and imprecise root cause analysis
• Effective capacity planning is elusive -- unplanned IT capacity or demand requirements were ranked as the number one cause for performance and availability issues
• Downtime is widespread and costly -- the cost of downtime for a typical company ranges from $10,000 to $1 million per hour -- according to the October 2012 commissioned study conducted by Forrester on behalf of Zenoss: Monitoring IT Business Services
