LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/09/12 -- Inktank, the first company to offer enterprise-level services and support for the open source, massively scalable distributed storage system Ceph, today announced that the Ubuntu project has included Ceph in its newest release, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
Inclusion in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS allows users to easily locate, install, configure, and upgrade components of the Ceph storage platform. Canonical provides enterprise grade support for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, with customer maintenance and security fixes available until 2017. Inktank will leverage its core team of developers to provide Ceph support to Ubuntu customers.
"With this release, users can implement a distributed and scalable storage infrastructure using Ceph while enjoying the integration and elegance the Ubuntu community has become accustomed to," said Bryan Bogensberger, President and COO of Inktank. "We believe that Ceph is the future of storage, and we are thrilled to be working with the Ubuntu project to free companies from the restrictions of expensive, proprietary systems."
Ceph is a unified storage platform comprised of an object store, block store, and a POSIX-compatible distributed file system. The platform is capable of auto-scaling to the exabyte level and beyond, it runs on commodity hardware, it is self-healing and self-managing, and it has no single point of failure. The Ceph project has been integrated with the OpenStack cloud platform and is included in the Linux kernel.
"The reality in data centers today is that they are running at hyperscale, with tightly packed racks of thousands of commodity nodes," said Nicolas Barcet, Ubuntu Cloud Product Manager at Canonical. "Ceph is a great way to provide our users a flexible, scalable storage solution that will thrive in this environment."
