Create better designs faster with computational fluid dynamics (CFD)

Stricter emission limits and new test procedures put the automotive and transportation industry under a lot of pressure. The Worldwide harmonized Light vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) introduces a new driving cycle (WLTC), resulting in a higher average and maximum velocity during testing. For this reason, the importance of aerodynamics is increased. Simulation provides a way to improve aerodynamics earlier in the design cycle allowing vehicle manufacturers to enhance aerodynamic performance before the first physical prototype. But to be successful, the digital wind tunnel results need to be validated.

In this webinar, our experts, with the co-operation of Chalmers University and Volvo cars, will explore the correlation between test and the digital wind tunnel for a slotted wall wind tunnel. In addition to comparing the physical and digital wind tunnel, the results are also compared to an open road CFD setup to see the impact of the wind tunnel. Finally, our experts will detail a fast method to get even higher throughput on the simulation, allowing the possibility for completing hundreds of design studies in a single week.

What will you learn in this webinar?

- How to reduce costs by designing with digital wind tunnel
- What are the important factors for correlating to a physical wind tunnel
- Understand how the wind tunnel impacts vehicle aerodynamics compared to open road
- Get familiar with methods to enable looking at hundreds of variants within a week, thus allowing reduced design time
About the speakers

Frederick Ross :Director, Simcenter solutions for Automotive and Transportation, Siemens Digital Industries Software

Frederick started with CD-adapco in 1989, which was acquired in 2016 by Siemens and has extensive experience working with customers on applications such as vehicle heat protection, aerodynamics, and passenger thermal comfort. Frederick has been directly involved development process enabling automation of virtual vehicle simulation all the way from CAD to results. Frederick is currently working with the STAR-CCM+ product management team to help customers streamline their in-house process.

Peter Altmann:Application Specialist for Vehicle Aerodynamics, Siemens Digital Industries Software

Peter has a Bachelor of Engineering degree in mechanical engineering and a Master’s degree in energy sciences. He joined Siemens in 2012 as a senior application engineer in pre-sales with a strong focus on complex geometry handling, aerodynamics and thermal management. He is now an application specialist for vehicle aerodynamics and part of the Simcenter STAR-CCM+ product management team.

Emil Ljungskog :Application Engineering for Vehicle Aerodynamics, Siemens Digital Industries Software

Emil is an Application Engineer for Simcenter STAR-CCM+ based in Gothenburg, Sweden. After receiving his PhD in Vehicle Aerodynamics from Chalmers University of Technology in 2019, he joined Siemens, where he is now assisting major Swedish automotive and heavy vehicle manufacturers with their use of aerodynamics and thermal management simulations.
