With the growing industry demand for a high-bandwidth I/O interconnect and data center infrastructure for artificial intelligence applications growing more complex, PCI-SIG® has been working to develop an industry standard way to implement PCI Express® (PCIe®) technology over optical fiber. PCI-SIG recently released two standards-based PCIe optical interconnect solutions to members. The Optical Aware Retimer Engineering Change Notice (ECN) amends the PCIe 6.4 and PCIe 7.0 specifications to include a PCIe retimer-based solution targeting AI, cloud, and data center applications. Direct Drive Link Extension ECN provides the industry’s first standardized modular optical solution to overcome channel reach limits. This update to the PCIe 7.1 specification provides channel extension using electrical signaling with redrivers – as well as optical signaling with linear drivers – extending reach beyond the chassis to rack and pod level.
