Failure to launch may well describe the overall industry experience with Voice over LTE (VoLTE). Although there have been pockets of success, by and large VoLTE has proven to be a much bigger challenge than anticipated and delays are common place. But, how could this possibly be? Based on our interactions with tier-1 mobile network operators (MNOs) and network equipment manufacturers (NEMs), we have come to the conclusion that the industry is hugely underestimating the complexity involved in deploying VoLTE services. VoLTE introduces an extremely sensitive type of data to networks that are already struggling under the load of unprecedented growth in mobile data. This, coupled with a number of incorrect assumptions about VoLTE, is creating a false sense of readiness. Adding to the complexity is the need for VoLTE to interwork seamlessly with other voice technologies. This includes legacy circuit-switched 2G/3G voice and now, Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi).
