Information security is one of the most important, yet misunderstood and underappreciated professions in the world. Despite the importance of the profession, it has near-zero unemployment and a worker shortfall that grows every year. By 2022, the workforce gap is projected to reach 1.8 million, but the profession is made up of 11% women and 89% men. If more women could be attracted to the profession, trained and retained, the workforce gap could be reversed. Most organizations say that bringing women into the profession is a priority, yet female participation has remained static since 2004. Despite the talk, the needle measuring women in the profession is not moving forward. This suggests that initiatives to attract women aren't proactive enough or that the profession isn't as committed to building a balanced and sustainable workforce as it claims to be.
