How do we cross the gap from complex information to a general audience? Democratizing data visualization is perhaps our greatest challenge.

There’s an incredible amount of data viz around, but unfortunately most of it does not communicate clearly. At least not to the great majority of the public.

It often seems cold and elitist, almost as if it’s designed for people with some training in understanding data. How do we improve this situation?

First, we recognize the audience we’re trying to reach, and then we can use well-proven journalistic principles to build a visual presentation that connects with them.

John’s blog: “Infographics for the People” promotes this same message for all forms of visual communication.

In this presentation, he will explore new approaches that can unleash the enormous potential of data-driven storytelling to inform and empower the general public.

Bio: John teaches informational graphics to undergraduates and graduates in the School of Visual Communication at Ohio University. John has won 80 major infographic awards, and run workshops and lectured in many countries. He is currently infographics director for Eight by Eight, a soccer magazine that was the 2015 Magazine of the Year for design.

In March 2017, an exhibition of his complete career (sponsored by Adobe), which covered both analog and digital visual explanations, was held at the INCH conference in Munich. This exhibition will be staged again at Ohio University in October this year.
