The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is one of the most widely deployed protocols in networks today and is the definitive routing protocol in the Internet. BGP is a flexible protocol, in that a variety of options are available to network engineers.

During this preview session we will focus in on real life scenarios that the Cisco TAC / HTTS team troubleshoots on a daily basis around BGP Routing Convergence.

Routing convergence can be defined as the pace of a protocol to quickly update the routing table after a protocol or link flap. In terms of BGP, it can be defined as how fast BGP can update its table and the routing table or even calculate an alternate path (in case of multipath deployment) after a link flap, a BGP session flap or even when the routing adjacency is being brought up for the first time.

BGP convergence problems are one of the most complex problems to troubleshoot. Convergence problems can lead to traffic loss and massive service impacts. Faster convergence leads to higher availability and improved network stability. Thus, it's important to understand what convergence means in terms of BGP and how it can be mitigated. This session focuses on various scenarios and commands that can help troubleshoot BGP convergence issues.
