Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), Switzerland’s largest public transport provider, transports 1.3 million passengers daily. It committed to modernizing and securing the way IT infrastructure is managed on rolling stock. An initial proof of concept using Foreman proved to be a promising and scalable solution to manage Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7. Using Red Hat Satellite, SBB runs 1,200 hosts on trains throughout the country, connected over a 4G mobile network. The additional features of Red Hat Satellite facilitate the management of host life cycles and content views. The high-latency connection led to the challenge of random timeouts that caused provisioning failure. Using Red Hat Consulting, SBB introduced Red Hat Ansible Tower to master daily configuration management for the fleet’s comfort systems. The combination of Satellite and Ansible Tower provides scalable infrastructure, enabling full automation of the provisioning process of a bare metal host running on a train. Ansible Tower has also proven to be a flexible configuration and software management solution for embedded devices that do not have any viable support for large-scale system operations. To prove the feasibility, SBB picked an industrial edge router running a vendor specific Linux distribution. This deployment reduced manual effort, cut costs by 60%, and reduced the total deployment time per train from 1 day to approximately 1 hour.
