Object storage solutions have been available in various forms for over two decades. The popularity of public cloud storage services and the use of the AWS S3 API as the de facto standard protocol for applications and in on-premises solutions has knocked down barriers to the broad use of object storage for application data. For many, the connotation of object storage as a solution for massive-scale data storage was outweighed by the perception that performance was slow, and that it should be reserved only for secondary or archival storage. Those days are long gone, as object storage has been tuned for years to deliver incredible levels of performance and is now taking another leap by fully leveraging flash media. The combination of object storage on all-flash will enable a new class of applications in AI & Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics, Edge computing and IoT use-cases — and even in traditional areas of data protection, such as Backup.
