National policy in NHS England is to direct patients who require Urgent & Emergency Care (UEC) to NHS 111 so that they are treated in the most appropriate care setting. If the patient requires to be seen within a Provider facility (ED, UTC, SDEC etc), an appointment can be scheduled and advanced warning of a patient’s arrival sent to the receiving service. The first phase of this policy was delivered in December 2020 with a number of tactical solutions deployed due to time pressures, together with the backdrop of the Covid pandemic.
