The evolving taxonomy when it comes to investing for more than just profit was also covered, with participants highlighting that there are a number of challenges here, both in terms of cross-border descriptions and evolution as people look for more refined descriptions. Phrases such as ESG are beginning to lose some traction as they fail to offer the definition investors - and indeed fund managers - need, but this is being replaced by more granular terminology. Whilst the evolution here will again be painful, it should make screening for appropriate portfolio companies that much easier as a result and ultimately this contributes to an investment megatrend of unprecedented scale. And whilst there’s obviously no guarantee of success for every last company that becomes part of this decarbonisation initiative, there’s no shortage of confidence that significant rewards, both financial and environmental, can be seen in the years ahead.
