The flexibility and future-proof capabilities of IP mean that, increasingly, broadcast centres and other facilities are being constructed with part or total reliance on IP infrastructures. With the ability to handle uncompressed signals emerging at precisely the same time as UHD and HDR become production ‘must haves’, it is no surprise that broadcasters worldwide are now migrating (albeit at varying speeds) from their former reliance on SDI. But although standardisation efforts have brought much-needed clarity to the design of IP-based broadcast facilities, their requirements can still vary considerably – as can the long-term visions of the broadcasters who use them. That’s why effective collaboration and having a clear set of goals from day one are essential to the development of IP-based centres.
